Heritage Action Zone

The Isle of Wight has two areas designated as High Streets Heritage Action Zones, one in Ryde the other in Newport. Our partners are investing in these areas to restore the heritage of our town centres and revitalise them for a bright future. Each town has its own programme of projects covering a range of activities including developing new uses for old buildings, restoring historic shopfronts and engaging the local community in the heritage of their town.

Historic England

Historic England manages the £95 million High Streets Heritage Action Zones programme which aims to unlock the potential of high streets across England, fuelling economic, social and cultural recovery and breathe new life into it for future generations. They are the main funder and a key advisor and delivery partner for the two Isle of Wight High Streets Heritage Action Zones.

Isle of Wight Council are a significant funding and delivery partner for the Isle of Wight High Streets Heritage Action Zones and host the two HAZ Project Managers as part of the Regeneration Team at the council. The Two HAZ programmes form a key part of the Council’s regeneration activity.

Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council

Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council are the lead partner for the Newport High Streets Heritage Action Zone and co-fund the programme. They are also partners in Shaping Newport, which is working to improve the town centre through a variety of initiatives alongside the HAZ.

Ryde Town Council are the lead partner for the Ryde High Streets Heritage Action Zone. They are a cofunder of the Ryde programme and provide various support services to the HAZ which is a key part of their larger development programme for the town.
